Document certification for MOSS

Filed under: Sharepoint,Vista/MOSS — stephenmuller @ 2:44 am

I meant to post this before but it slipped my mind until I wanted to find it again.

I think it is a bit of an oversight on MS’s behalf not to get certification for its RM abilities before the roll out. Or is it just because I do most of my work in Government agencies where certification is the FIRST hurdle for an EDMS.

Anyway I am happy the DoD approval will happen I just hope that they will make the effort to gain certification in other countries. But this will make it easier.

Default fields in Sharepoint lists

Filed under: Sharepoint — stephenmuller @ 5:16 am

For Sharepoint 2003 only

 I have been looking for a particular field that I want to reference in a document library event handler I am writing, to get the spelling right I triedto find a list on the net of the default field names used when a sharepoint list is created. Think I could find it easily??? noooooo..  A friend said “just write some code to return the list”. I am not a developer so I refused (but those who are a night or day developers can easily find the code on the net, im not so I only found them by accident).

Eventally I found a page that lists all the default field names for each sharepoint list type.

Filter values for a Data View webpart

Filed under: Sharepoint — stephenmuller @ 3:35 am

I have been trying to add a little more flexibility to an existing sharepoint site. Currently some webparts look at the querystring  to determine what documents should be displayed to the user. IE if the querystring has http://blahurl?Doc=Policy then the document relating to policy would be displayed.

Works well, however I wanted to be able to list documents that may have been marked as ‘Policy - Email’ or ”Policy - Leave’ etc.

 When using the default way of editing these webparts via frontpage. I selected the Filter link for the webpart I wish to edit, the only options that are available for comparing the field with the query string, were only the numeric comparisons were available in the dropdown (Equals, Is Null, Less than etc). I was after the “Contains” comparison.

I went back to the webpart in frontpage and selected web part properties and edited the Data Query Editor xml fragment. The section to change is

 <dsp:where xmlns:dsp=”Http://micorsoft…….”>

<dsp:Eq>

<dsp:FieldRef Name”Yourfield”/>

<dsp:Value Type=”xsd:string”><udc………..>

</dsp:Eq>

</dsp:where>

Change the <dsp:Eq> to <dsp:Contains> and the closing tag as well. There is another string comparison that can be used but the link where I got the info from is

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/spptsdk/html/soapmqueryRequest_SV01071735.asp

It all worked well and was even reflected in the filter string visible in Frontpage.

Hope this helps someone.

Upgrade to Vista

Filed under: Vista/MOSS — stephenmuller @ 11:20 pm

I have been swayed to re-install Vista on my laptop today. Two things have tempted me to do it.

A friend has assured me that VMWare will now work on RC1, if not I will hold him personally responsible.

VMware and Vista

Filed under: Vista/MOSS — stephenmuller @ 4:08 am

Seems that VMWare is working on the Vista problems. I have upgraded to 5.5.2 of VMware Workstation and was pleased to see the following line in their release notes about known bugs

The following are known issues with Workstation 5.5.2, Build 29772.

  • Microsoft Windows Vista Beta Build CTP 5472 Cannot Be Installed as a Guest Operating System in a Workstation 5.5.2 Virtual Machine
    When you attempt to install Microsoft Windows Vista Beta Build CTP 5472 in a Workstation 5.5.2 virtual machine, the virtual machine hangs as the installation completes the phase Windows is loading files. Work is in progress on this problem.

Good to see they are working on the issues, hopefully they are still looking at the issue with Vista as the host and using vmware from it.

Vista and VMware

Filed under: Vista/MOSS — stephenmuller @ 10:48 pm

Last week or so I took the plunge and installed Vista beta 2 on my laptop. No not as a VM image but as the base operating system. I was fully prepared for the problems its is after all still beta.

It ran fine, there were the obvious speed problems the explorer did my head in, but I wanted to use it get a an understading of it with office and most of all run it with a VM with MOSS on.

BUT VM just wouldnt work properly, if I did get it working the network would not bridge to the hosts network so I couldnt connect. Then I couldnt even get it working at all due to the fact I un-installed it and re-installed it.

Since my life revolves around the use of VM Images and demos I had to grudgingly reinstall XP as the host.

My whinge is this; yes I know it is beta (I suspect more people need to be aware of this) but I did expect VM to be more helpful and forthcoming with some assistance on this as a few people have had problems. For those who want to try harder than I there is a link here.

There are also some other posts on this forum just search for Vista +Host.

Oh Vista is still a beta if you dont like it dont use it. And wait. And wait. And wait.
